- LIFE PMFree-Ports will develop an environmental operational control tool that will enable the prediction, control, and minimization of fugitive emissions of PM10 and PM2.5 particles associated with the handling of bulk solids in ports
- The initiative has a budget of around €1.6 million, co-financed by the CINEA Life program
Valencia, October 6, 2025. – Last Friday, the kick-off meeting for the LIFE PMFree-Ports project was held in Castellón. The overall objective of this project is to guarantee clean air for European citizens, in line with EU regulations and the objectives of the Zero Pollution Action Plan.
The initiative, led by the Institute of Ceramic Technology (ITC-AICE) and involving Fundación Valenciaport, has a budget of around €1.6 million, co-financed by the European Commission’s CINEA Life program.
The main objective of LIFE PMFree-Ports is to develop and optimize an environmental operational control tool that allows the prediction, control, and minimization of fugitive emissions of particulate matter (PM), especially PM10 and PM2.5 associated with the handling of bulk solids in ports.
The project will contribute to this objective by quantifying these types of emissions and evaluating the effectiveness of existing mitigation measures and best practices. Its comprehensive approach will improve air quality in bulk solids terminals, facilitating the selection of the most effective operational protocols to reduce emissions.
The tool developed will be integrated into port management systems, structurally incorporating environmental variables into the sector’s daily operations.
The Fundación Valenciaport will actively participate in the project, being responsible for managing the demonstration phase in the Port of Valencia. Its tasks will include analyzing PM10/2.5 emission factors and efficiencies, validating the tool developed, conducting pilot tests with the agents involved, and collaborating in dissemination and networking activities.
The LIFE PMFree-Ports consortium
The LIFE PMFree-Ports project consortium is made up of six European entities: the ITC-AICE Institute of Ceramic Technology (coordinator); Fundación Valenciaport; the Port Authority of Gijón; the Port Authority of Cartagena; Puertos del Estado; and Oritia & Boreas, S.L.
