The Port of Valencia to Host the Final Conference of the H2PORTS Hydrogen Project

  • Valencia has become the first and only port in the world to operate a container stacker and a terminal tractor powered exclusively by hydrogen.
  • The final event will include a visit to the three pilot projects tested within the framework of the initiative: the ReachStacker developed by Hyster-Yale, the 4×4 hydrogen terminal tractor developed by Atena, and the hydrogen refueling station supplying fuel under real operating conditions, developed by CNH2.

Valencia, 17.11.25. On December 3rd, the final conference of the European H2PORTS project will take place, an initiative coordinated by Fundación Valenciaport in close collaboration with the Port Authority of Valencia (APV). This project has positioned Valenciaport as the first port in Europe to incorporate hydrogen technologies to reduce the environmental impact of its operations.

The event, which will present the main results of the project, will include a visit to the three pilot solutions tested at the Port of Valencia: the ReachStacker developed by Hyster-Yale, capable of moving containers over 30 tonnes using hydrogen as the sole fuel source, tested under real operating conditions at MSC Terminal Valencia; the 4×4 hydrogen-powered terminal tractor developed by the research and technology center Atena, tested at Valencia Terminal Europa (owned by the Grimaldi Group); the mobile hydrogen refueling station developed by the Centro Nacional del Hidrógeno (CNH2) and operated by Carburos Metálicos, an expert in the entire hydrogen value chain.

The day will also feature an afternoon session on the future of hydrogen in ports, organized by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, the project’s funding body.

The pilot tests, which began in mid-September 2023, will continue through the end of November 2025, subjecting the equipment to real-life operating conditions in a port terminal. This has made the Port of Valencia the first and only one in the world to operate both a hydrogen-powered container stacker and terminal tractor.

H2PORTS

The European project “H2PORTS – Implementing Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Technologies in Ports”, coordinated by Fundación Valenciaport in close collaboration with the Port Authority of Valencia and funded by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership program, aims primarily to test and validate hydrogen technologies in port equipment. The goal is to provide real, applicable solutions that do not compromise the performance or safety of port operations, while producing zero local emissions.

The H2PORTS project represents a total investment of €4 million and includes the participation of Fundación Valenciaport, the Port Authority of Valencia, the National Hydrogen Centre, and private companies such as MSC Terminal Valencia, Grimaldi Group, Hyster-Yale, ATENA (High Technology Energy and Environment District), Ballard Power Systems Europe, Carburos Metálicos (part of the Air Products group), and Enagás.

About the Clean Hydrogen Partnership:

The Clean Hydrogen Partnership, successor to the FCH JU (Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking), aims to strengthen and integrate the EU’s research and innovation capacity to accelerate the development and deployment of market-ready clean hydrogen applications in the energy, transport, construction, and industrial sectors. It also seeks to enhance the competitiveness of the EU’s clean hydrogen value chain. The partnership consists of three members: the European Commission, the hydrogen and fuel cell industry represented by Hydrogen Europe, and the research community represented by Hydrogen Europe Research.
