The Net-Zero MAR Alliance is constituted as an association

Valencia, 23 May 2023. – Last week the Net-Zero MAR Alliance, after almost two years of intense work, celebrated its act of constitution as an association.

This collaborative platform, which was born at the end of 2021 thanks to the impulse of Iberdrola, has as its main objective to promote the decarbonisation of the maritime-port sector in Spain, making itself available to all agents, companies and institutions that want to join efforts to reduce emissions from ports and maritime transport.

The Board of Directors of this association, which has been elected by all the members of the Net-Zero MAR Alliance, will be formed by Javier Cervera Alonso (Baleària) as president; by Federico Torres Monfort (Port Authority of Valencia), as vice-president; Eva Pérez García (Fundación Valenciaport), who will be the association’s secretary; and the members Sergio Platón Martínez (Iberdrola), Marta García Pellicer (Instituto Tecnológico de la Energía – ITE), María Merino Flores (Ghenova) and Pablo Campos-Ansó Fernández (Grupo Junquera Marítima).

The Net-Zero MAR Alliance aims to be the reference platform for the maritime and port sector in the field of decarbonisation. To this end, it will establish a continuous dialogue and coordinated action between all stakeholders in the sector, as well as with official bodies, will provide technical support to the members of the Alliance and will carry out communication, training and study activities to facilitate the achievement of the proposed goals.

It should be noted that the members of the Net-Zero MAR Alliance set up four working groups during 2022 and the first half of 2023 to discuss: electricity supply to ships from ports, the roadmap for the decarbonisation of the maritime and port sector, the decarbonisation of ships in navigation, and renewable energies in ports. The implementation of the working group on the decarbonisation of terminal machinery is pending for 2024. All these roundtables are guided by the ultimate objective of exploring the possible opportunities and solutions for the decarbonisation of maritime transport and port infrastructures.
