The Port of Valencia to host the IAME 2024 Conference

Valencia, 12 September 2023. – The Fundación Valenciaport, the Port Authority of Valencia (APV) and the Valenciaport Chair of Port Economics APV – UV, will organise from 25 to 28 June next year, the first edition in Spain of the annual Conference of the IAME (International Association of Maritime Economists).

This news was formally announced last week during the celebration of the 18th edition of the annual IAME Conference, held in Long Beach (California) under the theme “New realities in the global maritime economy” and organised by METRANS Transportation Consortium together with California State University Long Beach, in which representatives of Fundación Valenciaport, APV and the Valenciaport Chair participated.

The Director General of the Fundación Valenciaport, Antonio Torregrosa, presented the paper “Non-tariff protectionism and its impact on port trade flows; the case of Spain” as part of the session on maritime trade, moderated by María Soler, Project Technician at the Fundación Valenciaport.

For his part, Jonas Mendes, Senior Consultant in Port Innovation and Strategy at the Fundación Valenciaport, held an interesting debate on the evolution of port governance in Latin America and how to guarantee the public interest in the private landlord port management model, presenting the paper “Defence of public interests in an environment with ports managed by port development companies: the case of Vitoria and Barra do Riacho in Brazil”.

The Valencian delegation was also formed by Vicente Pallardó, Head of the Valenciaport Chair and Manuel J. García, Business Intelligence Manager of the APV, as well as other researchers from the Valenciaport Chair: María Feo Valero; Julián Martínez Moya and Christina Myriouni.

The annual IAME conference brings together researchers and industry leaders to explore the future of the maritime economy in an environment of persistent pandemics, geopolitical conflicts, rapid technological change and increasing urgency to manage global climate change. The aim is to inspire participants from around the world with innovations and new collaborations between academia, government and industry in response to a rapidly changing world.
