Fundación Valenciaport reinforces its commitment to renewable energies through RENEWPORT project

RENEWPORT

RENEWPORT will transform Mediterranean ports into clean energy centres by exploiting the potential of renewable energy sources.

  • Within the framework of the project, a pilot test will be carried out in the Port of Valencia which includes the installation of passable photovoltaic panels.

Valencia, March 13th, 2024. – Fundación Valenciaport has begun work on the RENEWPORT project, an initiative that will support the energy transition of Mediterranean ports, transforming them from centres emitting pollutants and greenhouse gases to clean energy centres, taking advantage of the untapped potential of renewable energy sources.

To achieve this objective, a set of tools will be developed to provide practical advice, guidance and calculation of the potential of using renewable energy sources to ports, according to their energy needs. In this way, it will provide them with a powerful solution to plan their transition to clean energy.

The project, co-financed by the Interreg Euro-MED programme, is led by the Autorità di Sistema Portuale del Mare Adriatico, with the participation of both Fundación Valenciaport and the Port Authority of Valencia.

Following the line of other projects underway, focused on obtaining energy from own renewable sources, RENEWPORT will not only improve the performance of port operations in terms of climate change and air quality, but the conclusions of the work will lead to the definition of a tool for ports as clean energy centres.

In addition, a long-term cooperation network will be established in the field of clean energy transition, transferring the results at local, transnational and macro-regional level, while establishing a strong cooperation with other projects of similar scope.

Fundación Valenciaport will be in charge of developing the toolkit and carrying out a pilot test by installing walkable photovoltaic panels in an area of the Port of Valencia.

It should be remembered that this pilot is a second phase of a smaller initial prototype, with a power of 1 kWp and a surface area of 6 m2, which was launched in 2021 in the north dock of the Port of Valencia. In this new phase, a second generation of these innovative walkable panels will be implemented with a larger surface area of approximately 30 m2 and a higher installed power of 4.5 kWp.

The RENEWPORT consortium

In addition to Fundación Valenciaport, the Port Authority of Valencia and the Autorità di Sistema Portuale del Mare Adriatico, 7 other entities are participating in the RENEWPORT project: Autorità di Sistema Portuale del Mar Tirreno Settentrionale, Chambre de commerce et d’industrie du Var, Port of Koper, Port Authority Of Rijeka, Port of BAR JSC, Durres Port Authority and Piraeus Port Authority.
