PERSEO – Providing ship emission measurements in real-time during ship operations at port

PERSEO is a project which final result is the development of a High Sensitivity Multispectral Imaging System (SIMAS) that has the potential to become a key tool in all port environmental management. The system for development has a series of innovative components based on a proof of concept developed at the Baleària terminal in the port of Denia in the framework of a previous collaboration between the members of the consortium and the shipping company, whose product is currently at TRL 5. The specific solution is based on a high precision measuring instrument based on 5 high sensitivity cameras each optimised in the detection and quantification of a type of gas (CO2, HC, SOx and NOx) or the quantification of the opacity of the plume coming from combustion machinery.

During the 30 months of the project, the current intelligent monitoring system will evolve, making it capable of measuring new pollutant gases (NOx), taking readings at a greater distance (up to 1 kilometre) and taking measurements in motion from the sea. All of the above, together with the development of a visualisation layer for the consultation and reporting of information to public institutions and other interested parties, will provide ports with sufficient knowledge to plan specific programmes to reduce the port’s emissions within the framework of a Zero Net Emissions Plan.

PERSEO therefore pursues the total decarbonisation of the 46 ports of general interest by means of specialised services which make it possible to know the quantity and type of emissions produced by each of the transport elements of a port installation (e.g. ships, lorries, cranes…). These inspections and measurement campaigns will make it possible to identify the most polluting elements in the ports, incorporating these measures in a complete inventory of emissions. This system will allow Port Authorities, Maritime Authorities, shipping companies and other port-logistic agents to supervise, monitor and catalogue the emissions produced in a given port, establishing annual reduction targets with the ultimate aim of achieving the total decarbonisation of the site.
